With an estimated 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed yearly in America alone, the desire to take measures to prevent this disease is perfectly normal for men as they age. While there’s no guarantee that preventative measures will keep this disease at bay, the reality is they can help. This is especially so when men tackle risk factors they do have control over.
What Men Can Do
While there are some risk factors that men have no control over, such as age and ethnicity, there are many potential risk elevators that men can alter. Here are a few of the steps men can take to reduce the likelihood this disease will develop as they age:
- Eating better – While research is still being conducted into the link diet plays in prostate cancer development, enough evidence exists to make doctors take pause. It is generally recommended that men eat low-fat diets that are rich in vegetables and fruits. Lean meats, low-fat dairy and complex grains are also suggested. High fat consumption – especially meat fats – has been linked to a higher risk of this particular disease.
- Obesity –While the jury also remains out on this particular risk factor, there is enough of a connection to make doctors recommend maintaining a healthy weight. Add to this the fact that obesity is also connected to a number of other diseases and just shedding the pounds makes sense.
- Smoking – Again, research hasn’t definitively made a connection here, but there’s enough supporting evidence that shows kicking this habit is just better for overall health. Some studies, however, have connected smoking with a great risk for death from prostate cancer. Keep in mind that this form of the disease is quite often curable.
Guarantees in health and life do not exist, but men can play an active role in preventing many diseases. Prostate cancer is one of them. By eating a healthy diet, refraining from dangerous habits and maintaining a healthy weight, men can reduce their risk for this disease and a host of others.
