Research is increasingly considering over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen as protective agents against prostate cancer. Previously, there was an established link between the use of aspirin in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. New data analysis from a population-based study in France reveals that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) without aspirin reduces chances of developing prostate cancer.
During a study from a French team known as the EPICAP (Epidemiology of Prostate Cancer) study, detailed records of 819 cancer patients under 75 years old who were newly diagnosed and 879 age-matched controls (without prostate cancer) were collected. Both groups were interviewed using standard questionnaires. Information gathered included personal medical history and drugs use, socioeconomic characteristics, family history of cancer, tobacco and alcohol consumption, diet, residential and occupational history and physical activity.
They were also asked about the name, frequency, and duration of any NSAIDs used throughout their lives. The details covered why they used the drugs and If the drugs were prescribed or OTC. The Gleason score and PSA at diagnosis information for the prostate cancer patients was obtained from their medical records.
- Results showed that the men who took one or more pills each day had 62% lower risk of prostate cancer compared to those who never used NSAIDs.
- The group that used NSAIDs had a 51% lower chance of developing high-risk prostate cancer (Gleason 4+3 or higher).
- The protective effect was found to be greater in men with a history of prostatitis. The group had a 79% decreased risk as compared with those who did not use NSAIDs. Now it is widely accepted that prostate inflammation can be a precursor of PCa, confirming that preventing prostate inflammation lowers the odds of PCa.
Therefore, using NSAID appropriately as directed in the prescription to relieve pain from headache, injury, muscle ache or arthritis and other viral, fever and bacterial infections is beneficial to the user because it reduces inflammation in the body, including the prostate.
