Men who are concerned about their risks for prostate cancer will find there are some steps they can take to lower the chances they will develop this condition. While not always preventable, there are some risk factors men can tackle head on. Avoiding the consumption of certain types of food, for example, may help lower overall personal risks.
If incorporating a healthy diet into the routine is part of an overall prostate cancer prevention plan, it is recommended men cut these food items from their routine:
Red and processed meats – A number of studies have implicated red, and most especially processed meats, in the promotion of certain forms of cancer. The list of cancers that may be influenced by consumption of processed and red meats does include prostate cancer. It is believed that chemicals that form in these meats may prompt changes in DNA that can promote the formation of cancer. It is strongly recommended that red meat only be eaten in limited amounts and that processed meats before avoided entirely or almost entirely.
High-fat dairy – While the calcium found in dairy products remains an important part of a healthy diet, overly fat choices can have unfavorable impacts. Whole milk consumption, for example, has been linked to an increased risk for prostate cancer to progress. It has also been linked to a higher prostate cancer mortality risk. It has been found that men who consume low-fat milk products may still develop prostate cancer, but generally of a lower grade or less aggressive nature.
Alcohol consumption – Men who drink a large amount of alcohol are considered to be twice as likely as non-drinkers to receive a diagnosed of advanced prostate cancer.
Saturated fats – Saturated fats have been connected to a number of health concerns, including a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. In regard to prostate cancer, it is believe consumption can raise a man’s risk for presenting with more aggressive forms of the disease.
