A group of researchers has developed a way to grow tumors in the laboratory from donated tumor tissues.
During the research:
- The tissue developed was found to be complex, just like the tumors found in prostate cancer patients. This means that new drugs and the combination of drugs can be tested quickly. They’ll speed up cancer research to allow patients to benefit from scientific discoveries.
- Existing blood cancer drugs were tested using the new prostate cancer model and the results were very encouraging. The drug combination that was used suppressed the growth of the aggressive prostate cancer cells that don’t respond to other treatments.
- The laboratory-grown tumors have helped doctors to rapidly compare various treatments and point out those that tremendously reduce the growth of a tumor.
The researchers have a large collection of laboratory-grown prostate cancer tumors that helps them to test new ways of attacking prostate cancer and quickly and more effectively. This new methodology promises swift and better treatments for patients.
