Prostate cancer has long been considered one of the leading forms of cancer killers in the United States for men. This disease strikes about 220,000 American men each year and claims some 27,000 lives. While reducing all of the risk factors for the disease may not be possible, eating smarter can make a difference, some doctors say.
A healthy, balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables has been shown to promote lower risks for many types of diseases doctors at the Cleveland Clinic say. In regard to prostate cancer specifically, they recommend a diet that is low in fat and high in vegetables. While going strictly vegetarian isn’t necessary, the recommendation is to eat plenty of plants on a daily basis whenever possible.
Green vegetables, especially, are considered highly effective at helping slow the spread and development of cancer. Some researchers say men who consume three or more half-cup servings of these vegetables weekly may see their risks for prostate cancer development drop by as much as 41 percent.
Tomatoes and other fruits containing lycopene have been shown to be very helpful, as well. Lycopene, one study found, could lower prostate cancer risk by about 35 percent. Fish’s Omega-3 fatty acids are also a good boost for prevention. The best sources here are salmon, trout and tuna.
Foods that are high in fat should be avoided. It’s best to use olive oil and other healthy fats in place of butter and other similar products to reduce the risk for a variety of diseases, including prostate cancer.
With thousands of men facing down prostate cancer each and every year, a good diet may pave the way for some to avoid this disease. Men are urged to discuss their risks for prostate cancer directly with their healthcare providers. Early screening for the disease can pave the way for successful treatment should it be detected.
